This is What Happens When Cody and His Dad Pair Up

Cody has a Speak and Spell. For those of you who may not know what a Speak and Spell is, here's a picture...

The Speak and Spell is very educational but awfully LOUD. Cody thinks it's hilarious to ask if he can sleep with it. I always tell him "No. If you accidentally turn it on during the night, it will wake everybody up." His dad, on the other hand, jokingly goes behind my back and tells Cody "Go ahead Code. I don't care if you sleep with it." knowing full well that Cody won't go against my wishes.

Night before last, we went through the aforementioned ritual, but this time, when I wasn't around, Don told Cody to go hide the Speak and Spell in his bedroom, under his pillow. Later on, I walked by Cody's room and this is what I saw...

The Speak and Spell was indeed under the pillow, but I think maybe Don needs to work with Cody on hiding things a little more discreetly. :)

Conversations Between Cody and His Dad/ A Father's Day Post

Cody loves his dad. I could not begin to count the number of times Cody says "dad" when Don is home. Seriously, it would be a ridiculous amount.

"Good morning dad."
"What do you think of that dad?"
"Hey dad!"
"How come you clear your throat all the time dad."
"Dad. What did you do at the 'port?"
"Did you get dust up your nose dad?"

When my other kids were little, I use to tell them if they didn't stop saying "mom", I was going to change my name, but not Cody. He is perfectly happy yakking at his dad.

Cody and Don also like to tease one another and call each other names. I have captured a few conversations Cody and his dad have had over the last week...

Cody- "You smell like a bird dad."
Don- "Really? What does a bird smell like?"
Cody- "Kinda like manure."

Don- "Hi Fred."
Cody- "S'up Dollar Face?"
Don- "Not much Pocket Change."

Codybelching so loud that he could win any burping contest
Don-  (quite annoyed) "Have you ever noticed that nobody else around here does that?"
Cody- "Not really."

Here is a Father's Day poem Cody made up for his dad:

Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Splenda is sweet
and so are you!

Pay Attention to Me!

For some reason, Cody takes pleasure in doing things to deliberately provoke people. It's his way of shifting attention back to himself.

Don, Cody and I were running errands a few days ago, when Cody began clearing his throat excessively in the back seat of the car. (This is something Don often does after he eats and Cody enjoys bugging his dad about it.) Don and I intentionally ignored Cody. After awhile, Cody finally said, "Are you ignoring me because I'm making fun of you dad?"

Keep in mind that Cody is blind as well as autistic as I tell you another thing he did this last week. The four of us were eating dinner when Katelyn mouthed something to me and then pointed downward. As I looked under the table, trying to understand what she was saying to me, this is what I observed...

Cody often will kick people under the table. This time he wasn't kicking Katelyn, just resting his foot on top of hers, trying to get a rise out of his sister. She didn't give him the satisfaction of saying anything and he eventually gave up and moved his foot.

Pathetic Little Liar

Cody loves his dad and tries to emulate him, whether it be copying his tone of voice, clearing his throat, or repeating words and phrases his dad says. The two of them like to tease each other as well. They call each other names (see Dodo Head post http://www.snippetsnstuff.com/2011/01/dodo-head.html) and have an ongoing argument about how to pronounce coupon and envelope.

Last night, the three of us were watching TV when Cody passed gas. This is nothing unusual for Cody, but what he said afterward was.

Cody...toot... "It was dad."

Don- "What was me?"

Cody- "I rattled a little bit."

Cody is a rather pathetic little liar. In a matter of about 15 seconds, Cody farted, blamed his dad and then confessed.

Ah-la-la-la. I Can't Hear You.

Those of you that have been following my blog for awhile know that Chase, my son who is three years younger than Cody, is a tease. The two boys have a one-of-a-kind relationship. When Chase comes to our house, he almost always talks to Cody first. Then the teasing begins. Chase knows exactly what to say to get Cody worked up. For some reason Chase finds this amusing. (I, however, find it rather nerve-racking.)

Today was no exception. Chase came to our house right after lunch and walked over to where Cody was sitting. He started to talk to him, but Cody, anticipating Chase's inevitable teasing, reacted differently this time. The conversation (or lack thereof) went like this...

Chase- How was

Cody- Ah-la-la-la. I can't hear you.

Chase- Cody, I said how was

Cody- Ah-la-la-la. I can't hear you.

Chase- Why are you

Cody- Ah-la-la-la. I can't hear you.

Chase- What are

Cody- Ah-la-la-la. I can't hear you.

It appears that Cody has found a new way to deal with Chase's teasing.

Dodo Head

Cody and his dad have a very unique relationship. They love to call each other names. It started when Cody was a baby and his dad called him Pooper Man. Here is a list of names they've acquired over the years...Liver Lips, Fred, Jack, Butt Head, Buttless Wonder, Sow Belly Pig, Prune Face, and some times it's Prune Faced, Liver Lipped, Sow Belly Pig.

Cody threw a new one out last night. We were sitting in the living room, watching TV, and Cody called out to his dad, "Hey, Python Breath!"

No worries, though. It's all in good fun.

(By the way, Cody titled this post.)

Dirty Deed or Hilarious Hoax?

Sometimes Cody gets in trouble at his Day Program for tripping people or laughing at others when they sneeze or cough. I must admit that I felt better when I read Lynn's blog post,  Fight! Fight! Fight! Bite! Bite! Bite!: The Itchy & Scratchy & Audrey Show at  http://www.autismarmymom.com/  . Lynn revealed that her daughter also thinks it's amusing when people get hurt. It's nice to know that Cody is not alone in this socially unacceptable behavior.

I received a phone call this afternoon from an employee at the Day Program. (I cringe when their number comes up on caller ID). She informed me that Cody now thinks it's funny to take the soap dispenser off the bathroom wall. Apparently it's loose, so he removes it then laughs his butt off about it.

Cody would not do this kind of thing at home; he knows that we wouldn't put up with it. So.....the only idea I had for them was to tell Cody if he does it again, he has to call and talk to me on the phone. He won't want to hear my "angry" voice on the other end, so I really think this particular behavior will stop. At least I hope so but I never hold my breath where Cody is concerned :)
